F. Scott Fitzgerald's book The Great Gatsby (1925) set during the Roaring 20's and the Jazz Age, has come to be known as one of the great modern novels.

Fitzgerald incorporates different sounds from a car horn to the ringing of a telephone. Notably, Fitzgerald uses popular music of the time, referencing seventy-one songs throughout the book.(Moreland 29). Fitzgerald uses music as symbol of emotion, providing a means to comment on the era of the time .
